Question by chicagos_no_1: How do I stop my constant craving for sugar?
I am absolutely addicted to sweets. Candy, cookies, cake, icecream, loads of sugar in my coffee, and more candy. I love candy.

It is so bad that some days I don’t eat anything BUT sweets.

Somehow I am a normal weight.

I want to stop eating so much sweet stuff because I am afraid of contracting diabetes. Diabetes doesn’t run in my family, but, still, my diet is atrocious and I could be the first in the family to get it.

Also, I can’t stand artificial sweeteners, not even Splenda (sucralose). I am very sensitive to the taste of them and can taste them in anything. I can even taste it in the air if someone just opens a little packet near me. I hate them. They taste like corrosive chemicals to me and make me almost gag.

I would even consider taking some kind of medication to stop me from craving sugar if I knew of one. Is there any help for me?

Don’t eat any sugary foods for a few days! This will stop the cravings because you will rid your body of the simple carbs! It works…3 days! Easy to do!

I just was diagnosed with diabetes, and I have discovered that there are tons of sugar-free things out there that taste great. Hershey’s makes good sugarfree chocolate and Reese’s PB Cups! Sweets without guilt!

Take a capful of apple-cider vinegar everyday. Mix it in water, tea, or drink alone.

At least you are honest about it! :-) And it’s great that you are a normal weight, but as you said, you are wanting to stop this because you are worried about diabetes, and it’s good that you are taking your health seriously.
Long term this will damage your health, no doubt about it, and will increase your changes of becoming diabetic when you are older. So, this is your chance to make a lifestyle change and you’ve already done the first step, recognizing that you have a problem.
As someone else has also said, going cold turkey is the only way! It’s gonna hurt but it’s the only option. If you satisfy your craving with a tiny bit of sugar each day it doesn’t take the craving away and you are more likely to cave in.
It’s really strange, but if you cut out sugar and carbs for a few days you will honestly notice that you no longer want them as much…..but it’s horrible, you will literally experience withrawal symptoms…sweating, headaches, lethargy, but then after 3-5 days you will feel WONDERFUL! You will sleep less, have more energy, have a clearer head….so don’t give up, sweat it out and you will feel better I promise.
After that time, you can of course have some sugar, but please don’t step back into bad habits quickly….if you feel you are becoming “addicted” again, cut it out again for a while.
There are some things people say help to curb cravings – there are patches like nicotine patches you can buy which have Vanilla scent that supposedly trick your brain into satisfying cravings etc. Natural sugars in fruit etc should also help.
You are right not to take artificial sweeteners either, they are BAD NEWS! Some of the sugar-free candies are not great either, they contain Malitol which upsets your stomach and a host of other chemicals, so they can help, but sometimes they are not a great option either.
So, good luck, and don’t worry if you fall off the wagon now and then, it’s better even if you have 5 good days and 2 bad per week than your current state of 7 days of sugarfest per week! You are being responsible and taking your health seriously which is great :)

Drink a glass of water with a few drops of lemon juice in it first thing in the morning
